HOW AND WHEN TO PRUNE CHERRY TREES
How to prune a cherry tree:
1. Choose the right time: The best period to prune a cherry tree is from mid-May to mid-August, when the tree is in full growth. If the tree has not been recently pruned at planting, light pruning can be done between November and mid-March.
2. Necessary equipment: Use clean, sharp pruning shears to avoid damaging the branches.
3. Basic pruning principles:
• Years 1 to 3: Establish a strong branch structure. Favor the growth of new shoots over older branches.
• From year 4: Minimize fungal infections by removing diseased and crossed branches. Maintain an open center to promote air circulation.
4. Pruning technique:
• First year: Prune the main stem to about 1 meter high in March.
• Second year: Select three or four main branches and prune them to about 40 cm in length, with lateral shoots at 15 cm.
• Third year: Prune the branches to about 35 cm in length, removing weak and crossed shoots.
5. Hygiene: Sterilize cutting equipment between each tree to prevent disease spread. Prune in dry weather to minimize infection risks.
6. “Wine goblet” shape: Encourage branches to grow upwards and away from the center of the tree. Remove shoots that grow inward to keep the center clear.
By following these simple steps, you can maintain the health and productivity of your cherry tree.
