Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast

Ingredients:

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1 cup packed brown sugar

2 tablespoons corn syrup

1 loaf about 12 slices French bread, cut into

1-inch thick slices

5 large eggs

1 1/2 cups half-and-half

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon orange zest optional

1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions:

In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the brown sugar and corn syrup until smooth. Pour this mixture into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.

Arrange the bread slices in a single layer over the sugar mixture.

In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, vanilla extract, orange zest if using, and salt. Pour this mixture evenly over the bread, ensuring all pieces are covered.

Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight, allowing the bread to soak up the egg mixture.

The next morning, preheat the oven to 350F 175C. Remove the plastic wrap from the baking dish.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the French toast is puffed up and golden brown.

Serve immediately, with the caramelized side up, accompanied by fresh berries or whipped cream if desired.
